LGBTQIA+ History Month: Taking Pride Into Our Local Schools

February is LGBTQIA+ History Month — a time to reflect on the journeys, voices, and victories that have shaped our community. It’s also a moment to look forward, to inspire the next generation, and to make sure young people across Lochaber feel seen, supported, and part of something bigger.

This year, Lochaber Pride is delighted to be visiting three of our local high schools to share the story of Pride: where it began, why it matters, and how it continues to evolve. From the early activists who stood up against injustice to the vibrant, diverse celebrations we see today, Pride has always been about visibility, courage, and community.

During our school sessions, we’ll be talking with students about the roots of the movement, the progress made over the decades, and the work that still lies ahead. Most importantly, we’ll be opening the door for young people to get involved — whether through volunteering, creative projects, youth-led initiatives, or simply by becoming informed and supportive allies.

Lochaber’s young people are already shaping the future of our community. By sharing our history with them, we hope to spark conversations, build confidence, and encourage everyone to play a part in making Lochaber a place where every person can live openly and proudly.

If you’d like to learn more about our school visits or find out how you can support LGBTQIA+ History Month activities, we’d love to hear from you.
